Environmental perception of outsourced cleaning staff at IFSC Câmpus Florianópolis about urban solid waste

Abstract

The study aims to assess the environmental awareness of outsourced cleaning staff at IFSC, who are responsible for collecting organic, recyclable, and general waste on campus. In terms of methodology, a qualitative-quantitative approach with a participatory nature was adopted, inspired by the principles of action research as outlined by Thiollent (2011). Data collection was conducted through a structured questionnaire with both open-ended and closed-ended questions, completed by 20 out of 23 outsourced cleaning workers. Regarding the qualitative data, the answers were analyzed using the content analysis proposed by Bardin (2016). Analysis of the quantitative data revealed that 12 (60%) of the subjects had received guidance on the correct separation and disposal of waste, while eight (40%) had not. Following the assessment of the participants' environmental awareness, environmental education strategies were developed, including the production of an educational video and comic book. These materials illustrate: the "journey of waste"—the destination of urban solid waste—and the importance of proper separation. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number four (4 - Quality Education). These materials emphasize active listening, dialogue, and the development of environmental education practices, aiming to enhance daily professional performance and strengthen an institutional culture focused on sustainability. The key outcome highlights the importance of awareness and collective participation.
